Oooof. This is terrible. We thought we'd withstood the worst fashion fatalities that this recession was going to cause our poor, dear Charlotte (R.I.P. Coco Fleur and Miss Priss, among many others), but we had no idea that our despair would have to dip this low.

Bob Ellis, luxury shoe purveyor that has been a part of the Charlotte shopping scene for 11 years, is closing its doors.

Luckily, their Charleston store (on King St.) will remain open, but we will mourn the loss of this excellent store in our midst. The service was always impeccable and the styles were always to-die-for.

You'll be missed, Bob Ellis. May there be many fabulous ladies up in shoe heaven waiting to totter around in your heels.

Fashion Distraction: Spring 2010 Bridal Runways

I'm introducing a new, recurring category to the posts here on Shop Talk. "Fashion Distraction" posts will direct you to stuff happening online or in print that are worth taking a break from work to peruse. What better way to start off this new, addictive category than with something totally frilly, frothy, and day-dream worthy: The Spring 2010 Bridal Runway Shows!

Is there anything more fabulous than watching bridal gowns float down the runway? No. No there isn't. It's pure decadence in fashion form. I couldn't wait to get myself to a reliable internet connection long enough to peruse the dresses that were debuted at bridal market this past week and weekend.

It would be foolish of me to try and name favorites... there are far too many and my head is swimming with all the dresses I would like to call my own (Yes, I got married a year a half ago, but a girl can dream), so just go, take a look, and let me know which looks you are loving and which ones you'd rather had stayed on the drawing board.

Trend On Trial: Leather Jackets

The Bomber. The Motorcycle. The Scuba. Short, fitted leather outerwear is the hottness this season, and I just can´t quite decide if I am ready to zip one on or not. Work through this with me, won´t you ST´s?

Pros: It never hurts to add a pinch of badass to your wardrobe. Pairing a tough leather jacket over a soft tee and jeans = instant girl power. Layering one over a flowy dress and leggings is a great way to add edge to an everyday look. Plus, leather jackets last for-eva! They age well, and if you invest wisely, the right one can be with you for a lifetime.

Cons: How do you know what kind to buy? There are so many out right now, it´s hard to know which one is going to stand the test of time and which one is going to be a trend that flames out. Also, sometimes leather smells weird and it makes other stuff in your closet smell weird. How do you avoid looking boxy? Should the leather have a sheen, because that seems a bit flashy, no? I know Lucky magazine had extolled to me the virtues of wearing tough girl jackets year round, even over flowy sundresses, but isn´t that just a smidge insane? If I wear it with jeans and boots are people going to think I´m waiting for my potbellied boyfriend to pull up on his Harley? So many questions.

Verdict: While tempting, I´d suggest staying away from anything brightly hued, or trendtastic (like the cute one with a ruffled neckline, here or the hoodie-inspired one here) unless you can find one faux and cheap, because you just don't know how that is going to translate from one season to the next.

Instead, invest in one that is a neutral color (black or dark whiskey brown, maybe even a good grey) with excellent details (does the hardwear and riveting look chintzy?). You want it to age well, and depending on how often you plan on wearing it, you might want it to look a little bit aged already (a shiny, squeaky leather coat is like the outwear equivalent of perfectly white Keds... you look like a nerd.). It should be soft, flexible, but scructured and fitted enough to make it obvious that you are all woman, and that this isn´t your boyfriend's jacket. (Speaking of boyfriend jackets, that's another trend this blog will have to take on).

If you can find one that fits that description, go for it girl. Unleash your inner badass.

Chances are, if you are going to the race, you don´t need to be reminded about it here on this blog. You are already pumped to catch the fall sprint to the championship cup and you´ve been tailgating and camping out since yesterday. So, perhaps this should be more of a warning to those who aren´t attending the race: don´t attempt any impromptu trips to Concord Mills mall this weekend unless that pair of discounted Joe´s Jeans from Off 5th is really worth 6 hours in traffic. Which... they might be. It depends on how you value a sale on designer denim.

KRAWL FOR CANCER - Plaza Midwood Art Krawl Benefitting Breast Cancer Awareness

I live in Matthews. All of our festivals, while charming, usually involve around inflatable kiddy rides and sno cones. That is why I like to vicariously live through Sarah, who is actually a Plaza Midwood resident, and therefore gets to claim cool events like this her ´hoods own. Nearly every store and restaurant in the Plaza is opening its doors, offering drinks, specials and entertainment and of course, art! All in the name of saving the tatas.

LET THE WILD RUMPUS START - Where the Wild Things Are Opens in Theaters

This is a fashion and style blog, so let me pause for a moment to say that there has never been an item of child fashion created that can beat the cuteness of Max´s furry suit with the ears and tail. Who wants to bet this is a hugely popular Halloween costume this year and next as a result of this movie coming out? Who wants to bet that I kidnap some other person´s child and ask them to wear one and pretend to be mine for at least one or two doorbell rings on the 31st? Who wants to bail me out of jail after I do it? Anyone? Okay then. Well, the movie comes out this weekend, and it´s been getting mixed reviews, but no one has anything but glowing praise for the look of the film. The visuals of a storybook come to life are stunning, and Max is spot on adorable.

CHEER FOR KAYLA - So You Think You Can Dance Tour

It´s been several months and I am still steaming over Kayla´s early knock out in the final round. Brandon as a finalist I could live with. But Jeanine!?! Winning the whole thing!?!?! Over KAYLA!?! Did you not see her zombie dance with the sweet eye makeup trick? Did you not see Addiction (photo above)? Sure her solos were a bit predictable, but come on, so are everyone elses on that show. UGH. So, the tour of last season´s top 12 is now hitting Charlotte (and yes, there is already another season on the air. I take comfort in the fact that Jeanine won´t keep her crown as long as winners in past seasons), and whether you agree with me that Kayla was brutally robbed, or whether you perhaps believe that it should have been Evan who took the crown (which likely means you are 14 years old), you can relieve the best dances of last season at Time Warner Cable arena this Monday.

Hello there Shop Talkers!

Yesterday was my first day on the job as the solo author of this blog, and I blew it. I was home sick and thus didn't have the chance to share any shopping gems with you all. Please forgive me, I promise to make it up to you right... now.

When I arrived back at work today, Sarah had left me a most wonderful gift: the press kit containing the annual Neiman Marcus Christmas Book. Some might find it foolish for them to put out such a pie-in-the-sky, you've-got-to-be-kidding-me collection of gift ideas in a recession year (they do include a selection of items that are $250 and under), but this is why we love Neiman Marcus. Even while their sales are down, they still keep their stores staffed to the hilt, with a sales person stationed at every designer's section and gobs more down in beauty and accessories. Necessary? Absolutely not. Kind of fabulous anyway? Definitely. That is what shopping is supposed to be like! Not an errand... an EXPERIENCE.

What's Happening: Jenn Takes Over Shop Talk

A love of fashion and a passion for food aren’t typically paired. Fashionistas these days pick at their salads and sip their Perrier while foodies are much more concerned with the texture of a dish than any fancy fabric. But I tend to think that the two areas aren’t all that dissimilar.

They’re both about indulging your senses—whether it’s with soft, flattering cashmere or a creamy crepe stuffed with fresh produce and hard-to-find cheeses. And let me be the first to say, there’s very little I enjoy more than indulging myself.

It’s no wonder then that I’ve long been torn between my love of fashion and my love of food. I like to think I’m following in some pretty famous footsteps. Marie Antoinette, for example, loved her fashion (see all style trends in 18th century France), but also adored her food (see “Let them eat cake.”). Of course, she was also beheaded for her indulgences and I’d really rather it didn’t come to that.

So, on that note, I’m turning over this fashion blog to my favorite shopping companion and one of the most stylish people I know, Jenn. Luckily for you, dear readers, Jenn is incredibly fashion-savvy and highly entertaining (if you’ve been reading this blog, you already know this). She also knows more about Hollywood styles than I ever will and she’ll probably never subject you to photos of her dog or week long exploits in dressing like a hippie. I’ll still be helming the style coverage over at Charlotte magazine (which, by the way, we’d love for you to subscribe to) because, as I said, I do love it. However, my blogging days will now be spent on the magazine’s new food blog* where I’ll be raving about my love of local chefs, new Charlotte restaurants, and a slight addiction to pad thai.

Truth Time: I watch an insane amount of TV, but, in my defense, I only watch good stuff. I don't fall for any of that VH1 reality stuff, or Crazy A#$ Housewives from Whatever City. I do read a TON of entertainment blogs and television criticism, and, within reason, I try to give a lot of shows at least a shot at a place on my Tivo. I am more than willing to talk TV with anyone whose interested (just @reply me on Twitter to get the convo going), but for now, I just to do my part to make sure you are all watching Glee. If Episode 3 "Preggers" doesn't hook you with it's hilarious tributes to Beyonce's "Single Ladies", then do it for the FASHION. Like the ADORABLE yellow dresses in last night's episode "Vitamin D". I mean just look at them! So cute! And the little matching gold flats! I die. Also, keep your ShopTalk eye's peeled for the precious outfits worn by guidance counselor Emma: her wardrobe is the epitome of J.Crew tailored, but punched up with fabulous colors. Her cardigans and necklaces alone make woozy with delight.

Jenn and I work in an office with two other women. For this reason there is much discussion of fashion, style, and "is that a new dress you're wearing today? where did you get it?" just about every day. In fact, I've already listed off the brand of every single thing I'm wearing to my co-workers this morning. (In case you were wondering, it's all Target. In my defense as a style blogger it's Richard Chai for Target, Patrick Robinson for Target, and Isaac Mizrahi for Target. I'm an admitted sucker for designer labels—no matter how mass market they are.)

Anyway, you probably weren't wondering what I was wearing at all. Because you were probably wondering where you can get your hands on those fabulous shoes above. Which brings me to a very style-savvy part of our little office: our intern, Evans. Most days, before Evans has even had the chance to sit down, we're demanding to know where she purchased her latest outfit. This morning she brought these gorgeous J. Crew shoes to our attention. And we thought we should share them with you.

Love It: Long Cardigans

First, let me be clear. I'm not talking about sweater coats (though those are cozy and they do have their place). I am talking about long, skinny, thin, definitely-doesn't-count-as-outerwear, cardigans. In case you haven't noticed, they are cropping up everywhere this Fall, and I, for one, have fallen hard for them.

I love them with mini-skirts and tights, I love them loose and flowing over a tank or tee with jeans and boots. I love them belted at the waist (skinny or wide belt, either will do), and I especially love them in neutral colors like grey and camel. The stripes on the J.Crew Forever V-Neck Cardigan ($95 in Merino wool) give this one a preppy, ivy league collegiate vibe, while others I've seen this season are definitively femme with delicate chiffon or ribbon detailing.

For the most part, Jenn and I keep our envy of style writers who attend international fashion shows to a minimum. After all, on days like today (when Conde Nast shut down three major magazines), we're just glad to have a place that is still paying us to work.

However, we are quite unbearably envious of those lucky few who got to see the Paris Dries Van Noten show last week. The fashion blogosphere—and the regular news outlets for that matter—can't seem to stop talking about the fabulous colors, gorgeous designs, and overall general dazzling excellence of Van Noten's Spring 2010 collection. For a few glimpses of the collection, check out WWD's coverage. It's stunning.

Locally, you can find Dries Van Noten at Capitol. I don't think it's anywhere else in Charlotte, but please correct me in the comments if I'm wrong. In the meantime, enjoying being just as envious as we are.

Weekend Ahead: October 2-4

Tomorrow morning is the 2009 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. And you should be there. Designed to promote positive awareness of breast cancer, the event raises money to fund for the fight against breast cancer. Tomorrow night, local charity BeardsBeCAUSE is throwing their annual Clean Shaven Party at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille to kick off two months of facial hair growth for a great cause. The charity benefits the United Family Services' Shelter for Battered Women and was founded by two local guys with a great idea for how to help out. Sarah's Musings on London Style

Last week, after leaving Shop Talk in the very able hands of Jenn, I took a lovely little trip to London. In order to make myself feel better after receiving numerous evil glares and my fair share of hate email from Jenn for leaving her behind, I decided to hit the city's high streets for a bit of shopping. I consider London to be one of the most fashion forward cities in the world so I was thrilled to have the chance to explore its chain boutiques (Next, Oasis, River Island, Miss Selfridge), its top super stores (Topshop, H&M, Selfridges), its markets (Camden Lock, Portobello Road), and of course, the mecca of all shopping, Harrods.

In other words, after my one week there, I have a pretty good feel for London's street fashion. Unfortunately, I have a pretty bad feeling about it.

In the past, I've come home from London with my suitcase bursting at the seams ready to bring high fashion to where ever I called home. Typically, the fashions have been cutting edge, gorgeous, and just what I wanted to wear. Apparently, I've outgrown those days. After a few minutes in Topshop, I felt like a grandma. I can't wear satin jumpsuits. Or sequined hotpants. Or midriff baring sweat shirts. And I absolutely refuse to wear rolled up denim shorts with embellishments. Or baggy hot pink sequined pants.

And so I'm having a bit of an identity crisis. In the past, I've always looked to places like Topshop for my style ideas. I've occasionally emulated Mischa Barton or even an Olsen twin or two in my attire choices. But if these are the styles, then I have a feeling that those days are quickly drawing to a close.

I was in a state of despair after leaving Topshop, certain that long days of shopping at Talbots and Ann Taylor were ahead of me. After all, if I couldn't wear Topshop, certainly my days of style were numbered.

Then I went to Harrods. As it turns out, most of the world isn't wearing clothing that looks like the love child of MC Hammer circa 1985 and the cast of Cats. In fact, there are some absolutely beautiful and sophisticated clothes out there that are both style savvy and attractive. I fell in love with this shell bead dress by Milly and this botanical print suit by Missoni, among many others.

Of course, Harrods is in a price range I can only dream about, but none the less, I felt much better after my trip there. I suppose that eventually hotpants and sequined pants will make their way to Charlotte. And, as someone who appreciates all attempts at something new in fashion, I'll applaud those of you who wear them. But I won't be joining you. I lived through the 80's once and that was enough for me, thank you very much.

Q & A with Steve Madden

The man behind the shoes is going to be at Belk at South Park this Saturday, Sept. 26 from 2-3:30 p.m. talking about fall trends and, most importantly, giving away free shoes. (Are there any two words I like to hear more in the same sentence than "free" and "shoes"? I think not.)

To whet your appetite, we asked Mr. Madden to answer a few of our burning questions!

Shop Talk: What is your favorite trend in women' shoes for fall?
Steve: I have to say the menswear trend. Oxfords and lace-up booties are great looking.

Shop Talk: What trend are you loving in women's fashion over all this season?
Steve: Again, I like the menswear inspired looks: boyfriend jeans, flannel shirts, and skirts with booties.

Shop Talk: What footwear trend are you hoping is on the way OUT? Anything you'd prefer not to see anymore?
Steve: I'm not really sick of any trend. I am obsessed with shoes in general.

Shop Talk: Is there a boot in your collection that can really be a workhorse in a girl's closet for both day and night? How about a boot that mom can borrow from her daughter without looking ridiculous?
Steve: The Intyce is a gorgeous boot that is great for day into evening and around town. The over-the-knee boot, Blondee is something moms and daughters can wear with equal style.

There are some style bloggers out there who might think I am coming late to the party by writing about Gilt Groupe a bazillion years after savvy fashion-lovers found out about it, but you know what, not all of us catch on to these things that fast, and I, for one, am grateful when someone leads me to something I probably should have known about but didn't. (Even if they do say "You probably already know about this but....", thus making me feel stupid for not knowing.) So, having said that:

You probably already know about this, but if you don't, you should. Gilt Groupe is a "members only" web club that alerts you to special, limited-edition sales on MAJOR designers. For example, today's sale includes:

- Marc Jacobs handbags at 50% off (granted, that still makes them about $650 each)
- Stephen Dweck Jewlery at 50% off
- Soshanna dresses at 50% off (totally affordable at about $128-$140 dollars!)

I love this for two reasons: 1) I feel somehow cooler just for having been accepted as a member... even though they accept everyone. It's as though they actually believe I am capable of owning a Marc Jacobs handbag, even though that is completely erroneous. 2) There are things on here I can legitimately afford when they are marked down 50%, which means I could snag something fabulous I would have never otherwise known I could have. This may sound callous, but there is an upside to this whole "recession" thing. Namely, how hard stores work to get our dollars. There's just something a bit enjoyable about how many parties, special sales, promotions, and deals we've had thrown at us over the last year. Don't get me wrong, I hate that retail is suffering, but I find a smidge of solace in the fact that I haven't had to pay full price for anything I've liked in what seems like ages. I might be buying a one-way ticket to the Devil's lair for saying that, but dang if I won't go in a killer outfit I bought on sale.

Continuing in the trend of wooing your wallets, Belk is hosting a Girls' Night Out this WEDNESDAY, September 23 from 5-8 p.m. During that time, they're offering 20% off all regular and sale prices, and individual designers and brands will be doing giveaways and special deals of their own (For example, luxury handbag line Brahmin will be doing a killer gift with purchase).

Sarah is off galavanting in London, which means it was nearly impossible for me to log into Shop Talk this morning, as I am quite literally blind with jealous rage. However, then I remembered that because Sarah is gone, I get to have sole control over the rating/loving/hating of last night's Emmy fashion, without Sarah jumping in to defend some bohemian nightmare. So, without further adieu, here are Jenn's picks for the best and worst of last night's Emmy's. Think I got it wrong? Tell me in the comments!

The White Dress:

There were a TON of white dresses on the red carpet last night, and I am almost ambivalent about who ends up in which category because I feel differently about them all each time I click. But for the moment, here's where I landed.

Best: Mariska Hargitay (classic, lovely, luminous)

Worst: Leighton Meester (toilet paper clumps? harsh red lips?) with honorable "Worst" mentions for January Jones and Kara Whatserface from American Idol.

The Blue Dress:

Best: Julia Louis Dreyfus (who I think gets hotter every year) and Christina Hendricks (who looks a little awkward when she's smiling, but has curves that kill and skin to kill for).

Worst: Sarah Silverman - I think the photo below speaks for itself. With honorable "Worst" mention going to Christina Applegate. I just didn't dig this gown. Can we be over mesh panels around the middle already? Also I am anti-one shoulder gowns.

The Black Dress:

Best: Tie between Jenna Fischer (who normally falters come Red Carpet time), and Heidi Klum (who manages to look like 2 million bucks at 9 months preggo. Un-frakking-fair.)

Worst: Tina Fey

After last year's fabulous cleavage-framing frock, this black dress just seemed a little... sedate. Tina still looks lovely, but the dress looks like it belongs on the wife of some larger male star, not on the funniest female alive. Click here for a second look at this lackluster gown. To be fair to Tina, I actually hated this dress more but my level of disappointment was higher with Tina. I expected more from her.

The Metallic/Sparkly Dress:

This was a toughy. There were a number of metallic frocks on the red carpet last night and I didn't lurve any of them. Mostly I think they all look painful and scale-y, or just plain boring. I actually had to open the category up to "sparkly" and metallic so that I could actually get behind a dress for the "Best" title.

Best: Definitely more sparkly than metallic, I loved this dream-like dress on Rose Byrne. As for actual metallic, I guess I'd have to go with Kelly Cuoco's gold column.

Worst: The rest of them. Including this one (A belt? Really, Sandra?), this one (tired of this drapey look, Jamie Lynn) and this one (ouch! looks like it could cut me!)

The Red Dress:

Best: Let me be clear, I thought Blake Lively's big fat braid down her back was outright INSANE, but her boobs in this red dress were a sight to behold. And, if you are gonna wear red, WEAR RED. She did.

Worst: This just makes me feel even better that I stopped watching Heroes after the first season. Hayden Panettiere, thumbs down. I will not be saving this cheerleader.

The Chin Up Award:

Not as in, "Chin up, sweetie, you look fabulous!" but as in "From the chin up you looked great. The rest was just regrettable." This award goes to J. Love-Hew, whose face and hair looked lovely, but whose dress looked like Jessica McClintock 2001.

Honorable mention for the Chin Up Award goes to Kyra Sedgwick. You are too old to be wearing that much pink, even if you are still bright eyed and beautiful.

The Wasted Potential Award:

I have a deep, unending love for all things West Wing, and therefor I was really pulling for Zoey Bartlett a.k.a. Elizabeth Moss. I like the concept of the neutral dress with the bold necklace, and I was even okay with it being one shoulder, but.... this just didn't work. It wrinkled, the across the chest sash piece looks awkward, the necklace didn't sparkle enough, and the color wasn't quite right with her skin and hair. This had the potential to be a knock out... instead it was just "meh".

The WTF Award:

Here's something you should know about me: I lived in LA for a year, and saw my fair share of celebrities at awards shows and premieres as part of my job.... but I reserve a special fondness for the stars that I saw just "out and about", and not at an official industry function. I am, therefor, fond of Mila Kunis, because I shared an elevator ride with her once, coming up from a parking deck. I also loved the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall, in which she is gorgeous and loveable. I just wanted you to know all of that before I completely diss her for wearing this ridiculous dress and giving sour puss faces to the camera like she is Wednesday Addams or something. Mila, love you, mean it, but this is a definite "WTF" award winner.

What's Happening: Hair and Fashion Show by Shine Salon

When it comes to style, there are many areas in which Sarah and I disagree. Sarah has an affection for fringe that I find disturbing, and I have an addiction to 3-inch heels that Sarah finds to be misguided, at best. However, there are many things we have in common: such as our shoe size, a love for waist-cinching belts, and undying devotion to Amy Swaney, our colorist and hairdresser at Shine Salon. The folks at Shine have made Sarah's blond strands shimmer like diamonds, and have seen me through at least 12 different shades of red, all of which have inspired strangers to stop me on the street to shower me with compliments (something I have absolutely no problem with).

Now, Shine is teaming up with some of the coolest boutiques in town (like Lotus and Hong Kong Vintage) to put on a show that demonstrates how fun and easy it is to look good for work during the day, and kick it up a notch before you hit the town at night. They're calling it "Transformations" (inspiring, no?).

Better yet, proceeds from the show benefit R.A.I.N. (Regional AIDS Interfaith Network), that supports local Charlotteans who are living with HIV or AIDS. They'll also be raffling off free services from Shine, so don't miss out!

DISCOVER PECHA KUCHA - Pecha Kucha Charlotte in NoDa

Sarah: "Jenn, can you add tonight's Pecha Kucha to The Weekend Ahead." Jenn: "Um, yes, assuming you can explain to me what that is." Sarah: "It's, well, uh, why don't I just forward you the email." It might have a weird name and be kind of hard to explain to others, but Pecha Kucha is really cool - essentially it's an opportunity for "adult show and tell". Members (usually very artistic, creative, philanthropic, poetic types) get together to share ideas, visual statements and their talents in a supportive, open environment. Just about every social, cultural and artistic theme you can imagine is open game, and you should come with an open mind. I wish I could tell you more, but it's really kind of "you gotta be there" sort of thing. So be there.

The joke was well played, but it's not like we (we being the Liz Lemon's of the world) can help it that those dang Indigo Girls are very good at finding clever, poetic ways to express what it is like to be a woman! WHINE ABOUT HOW THEY RUINED YOUR BELOVED CHILDHOOD STORY - Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Opens This Weekend

Okay, that may be a bit prematurely harsh, but you have to understand, this book IS my childhood. It lived at my grandmother's house, on a bedside table in the guestroom. It was there every time I came to stay. My mom read it to me, my dad read it to me, my grandmother read it to me, and eventually I got old enough to read it over and over myself. The illustrations were eerie and whimsical, the story was outlandish and playful, and that image of the sun rising over the snow covered hill like a pat of butter on a pile of mashed potatoes is forever burned into my memory. Which is to say that if this movie is terrible, there will be hell to pay courtesy of yours truly. Jenn out.

What's Happening: New York Fashion Week

So for being a fashion and style blog, we haven't done too much chatting about New York Fashion Week. That's mostly* because we assume that if you're looking for online coverage of it you've already found it on the best sites for it like New York magazine or STYLE.com. Their coverage is exhaustive and should come with a warning that it could distract you from real life for hours on end.

There's certainly plenty to check out with spring 2010 fashions. There are ruffles (apparently Betsey Johnson forgot that other forms of material do exist), there are unusual cuts (it appears the models for Max Azria were attacked by wild dogs before going on the runway), and there is an incredible amount of orange (looking through Carolina Herrera's collection you might forget there are actually other colors).

Personally though, I love blue. Therefore this spring's looks make me very happy. (See above.) There were splashes of color in every collection, but the deep blue hues and brilliant aqua tones caught my eye over and over again. From right to left above is Mulberry, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Carlos Miele, Nicole Miller, Reem Acra, Thakoon, Tibi, Tracy Reese, and Zac Posen. Or, if you want, you can just refer to it as my fantasy spring wardrobe.

*It's also in part because we're in a state of depression that we're not there. Jenn is crying over not seeing elegant red carpet gowns. Sarah just wants to see Marc Jacobs and Julia Allison.

Love It: Anna Sui for Target/Anthropologie

I don't really own much designer clothing. I am, after all, a magazine editor. In case you hadn't heard, we're not exactly hedge fund managers when it comes to wallet sizes. Due to this, there's nothing I love more than getting in the top designer name at a significantly cheaper price.

When Viktor & Rolf designed a line for H&M, I was with the masses, scooping up shirts I didn't need. When Payless first paired with Abaete, I may have gone on a shoe buying frenzy. My point here is that I love a deal and a name. It's a tricky balance. And now, I'm especially confused.

Right now, there is an Anna Sui for Anthropologie dress that I love. It's there to the left above. It's $228. And then there's also an Anna Sui for Target dress I love. It's there to the right above. It's $59.99. Suddenly, I'm facing a problem that is the first of its kind for me: A designer I love has created looks for two of my favorite stores. This is probably the best problem I've ever had in my entire life.

So yeah, I think I've worked through this. I feel better. I'm going shopping now.

Product Spotlight: Boots Botanic Intensive Moisture Mask

Being a lady with expensive taste is hard in a recession. Already this year, Sarah and I have had to resort to throwing 'bows to get into warehouse sales, gathering up random stuff from around the house to sell willy-nilly on eBay, and I even agreed to relinquish my status as a chemically-enhanced auburn-redhead to save some dough.

There came a point for me however when I just went too far - that point came when I was no longer able to squeeze, pump, or scrap any more out of my favorite (higher-end) beauty products and I decided that just replacing them with drug store/bargain equivalents would be okay. For the most part, they were (I am now a devotee of this hairspray and Ulta brand eyeshadow), but not when it came to skin care. I made the poor, poor choice of trying to substitute my perfect (expensive) cleanser and lotion with lesser versions and my skin flat out REVLOTED. Breakouts, dry patches, redness, the WORKS. It was miserable.

Just when I was ready to break out the credit card and charge a hydrating facial from a high-priced spa, I decided to go the drug store route one last time. ("What! Did you not learn your lesson Crazy Lady?")

I bought the Boots Botanic Intensive Moisture Mask ($7.99) at Target.

Shoptalkers... let me tell you. It was amazing.

It goes on feeling like a cross between lotion and a creamy face wash, soaks in and turns clearish in 5-10 minutes, and then you just use a damp washcloth to wipe away the residue. (Bonus! It's British! Gawd how I love anything British.)

The result is incredibly soft skin and, in my case, a near immediate cure for my angry, dry, "Why would you do that to us!" skin.

Two weeks later (using the mask three times a week), my skin is back to normal. While I'll probably have to splurge and start buying my expensive facial wash again in order to avoid a similar disaster, this eight-buck wonder mask is going to stay in my beauty arsenal from now on.

Weekend Ahead: September 11-13

Ok, so there's a lot of really fun stuff going on this weekend. Here's our abbreviated version:

EAT
The Blues, Brews & BBQ festival going on this weekend uptown may just be my favorite Charlotte festival. Last year I ate my weight in pork and, while usually this kind of gluttonous behavior leaves me feeling guilty for days, I didn't regret one delicious, tender, rich, flavorful moment of it. Not one. There are beer samples, 'cue samples, and plenty of live music. The festival kicks off at 11 a.m. tomorrow on Tryon Street uptown and it's free to get in. Enjoy.

EAT (more)
Lets talk about baklava. Sweet, sticky, dripping-with-honey, gets-all-over-your-hands baklava. At the Yiasou Greek Festival on East Boulevard in Dilworth this weekend, you can get just about any variation of it. Plus, there's plenty of other fantastic Greek fare as well as some other fun cultural stuff: exhibits, presentations, and the like. It's only 2 bucks to get in so you can save your money for that aforementioned baklava.

REV YOUR ENGINES
Ok, I know nothing about cars. That's a lie. I know this: I know I want a black Lotus because one time I heard a Ludacris song about one. There, that's it. My knowledge is exhausted. Of course, if I wanted to know more, I could go to the Charlotte Auto Fair up at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord this weekend. The fair starts at 8 a.m. and goes until dark. It goes through Sunday and costs $10 to get in. And there are a lot of cars. If you want to know more than that, you'll have to go to their Web site at charlotte-autofair.com.

CHEER
The Panthers are playing. And, just in case you hadn't heard, they're playing the Eagles. And, just in case you've had your head under a rock for the last month, a certain notorious former Falcon with a little bit of prison time under his belt is now playing for the Eagles. So, even if football isn't your thing, there's plenty of entertaining drama associated with playing the Philadelphia team now. So, pull on your Delhomme jersey and get ready for a fun game—it starts at 1 p.m.

What's Happening: Fashion's Night Out

Tonight is the night. In stores across the country—and the world for that matter—there will be sales, festivities, and serious shopping to kick off the fall season on the eve of New York Fashion Week. It is Fashion's Night Out, a global celebration of fashion during which fashion retailers are keeping their doors open late and doing some serious celebrating.

Here in Charlotte the epicenter of that celebration is occurring at Neiman Marcus at SouthPark. All forty Neiman Marcus stores across the US are celebrating with fun stuff going on in the store—fashion presentations, cocktails, beauty makeovers, and more. The event at Charlotte's Neiman Marcus goes from 6:30 to 10 p.m. and features lots of fabulous fashions. Plus, the exclusive Fashion's Night Out t-shirt (seen above on model) will be for sale during the event for $30. Forty percent of the proceeds from the shirt will go to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

Of course, here at Charlotte magazine, we're a little partial to tonight's event. We're girly. Like love-the-sequins, throw-in-a-feather, the-more-pink-the-better kind of girly. So, it should come as no surprise that we love ban.do, an online store based out of Los Angeles that sells the most gorgeous hair pieces we've ever laid eyes on. From Jenn-style sophisticated to Sarah-style bohemian, these are the kind of accessory that can change an entire outfit from simply stylish to stunningly fashionable.

Love It: SJP's New Look in SATC The Movie Part Two

And so I ask myself, "Could it be possible that Carrie Bradshaw is wearing something that an actual normal human person could potentially wear in real life?"

I think it is.

This. Is. Adorable. It is classy, it looks comfy, it's easy to accessorize, it goes great with her tan and her "Why yes, I did let my hair air dry while drinking mimosas on the balcony of my fabulous new married-girl apartment" hairdo! This actually looks like a dress I (and other normally proportioned ladies of America) could own and love owning. I mean, granted I probably can't afford it, but I could DEFINITELY afford a knock-off of it, and I'd be happy with that.

Also, I happen to love that she's carrying her fancy little metallic clutch and then this big-momma bag. I do this all the time, though I should clarify that my giant addendum bag is usually a recyclable green bag from Harris Teeter, not something as chic as the one she's toting.

If this is what we can expect from SATC Part Deux, then count me in, Carrie and friends!

BREAK OUT THE TEAL - Panthers vs. Ravens Pre-Season Game
I've always loved the sound of that Panther's growl that they play every time the team does something good. I was not aware of this, but apparently the Ravens have a bird sound that is used in a similar manner. I have invited a Ravens fan to the game this Saturday, and I am quite excited about our t0-the-death sound effects battle. I do a mean impression of that Panther growl. I had a major block while trying to write about this concert. I couldn't get past the name. Chickenfootchickenfootchickenfoot. Surely, SURELY they could have taken .003 more seconds and come up with something better, right? I mean these guys hale from Van Halen and Red Hot Chili Peppers - they should know better. So, I looked it up on trusty wikipedia and I feel much better now, because apparently they never intended for this to be their name at all. See:

Love It: Citisoles

Remember the first time you saw a pair of Spanx? And you thought, "That's so brilliant. Why didn't I think of that?" Yeah, well, here we go again. Enter Citisoles.

If you are a woman—or just someone who loves fashion—you know that there are "shoes" and then there are "priceless pieces of joy for your feet that are actually part of your destiny." These Christian Louboutin boots fall under the latter for me. They're in this week's Fall Fashion issue of New York Magazine and they are stunning.

Unfortunately, they're only available at Saks Fifth Avenue. We don't have one of those yet in Charlotte.

Also unfortunately, they cost $1,995. Not to give you too much insight into my finances, but I'm pretty sure I'd either have to give up eating or living in a place with a roof to purchase them.

Also unfortunately, to get the full effect of wearing boots that reach this high, one would have to wear a skirt that is shorter than anything I've worn since 1993.

Alas though, a girl can dream, right?

(They're not the same. They're barely even close. But if you too have a taste for purple suede boots with high heels, there's a pair of Jessica Simpson brand boots for $158 right now at Nordstrom. Trend on Trial: Hippie Chic

In case you’re coming in late on this one, last Friday Jenn challenged to me to one week of dressing boho/hippie. As someone who frequently fantasizes about being a gypsy-esque nomad, wandering through fields of daisies and talking about free love, this seemed a prime opportunity to dress for my dream. (Plus, Jenn said she’d give me a gift card to Lowes if I did it. Because, you know, every free spirit wants a Lowes gift card.)

I’ve learned a lot over the last week of dressing in flowy attire and wearing random things on my head. I thought I’d share my new wealth of fashion-related knowledge with you. And so, without further ado, here is “Sarah’s Top 10 things she learned as a pseudo-hippie”:

10) Headbands around your head hurt. They may look all cool and “look at me, I want world peace,” but they feel like someone is squeezing your brain.

9) It’s hard to type and wear bangle bracelets at the same time. I can see why people didn’t bring their laptops to Woodstock.

8) If you wear a daisy and a braid in your hair, be prepared for people to call you things like “hippie chick.” If you wear a fedora, be prepared for them to call you things like “Britney Spears.”

7) Warning: Dressing like a hippie may tempt you to actually say things like “I just feel like society pressures us into making decisions like marriage by telling us those choices will bring happiness. And that’s just not true, man.”

6) It’s hard to ask people to take you seriously when you’re wearing 14 necklaces.

5) Calling your style “boho” is an excellent excuse to wear very loose-fitting clothing in public and not just look like a slob.

4) Hippie attire is best suited for places that are not professional. Answering emails while wearing a leather band around your head just seems odd. Clearly, leather band wearers should be frolicking through a sunny field and talking about free love.

3) Hippie and boho and gypsy can get all mixed up sometimes. When in doubt, just ask yourself this question: Would Sienna Miller wear it?

2) Scarves are the best invention known to man. Ever.

1) Dressing hippie/boho is fun. And generally comfortable. And kind of cool. But it’s probably a good idea to refrain from doing it at work. Unless, you know, you happen to be doing it for a work-related blog. (Best excuse ever to live the dream for a week.)

I'm a writer so people often ask who my favorite author is. I tend to say F. Scott Fitzgerald mostly just because it has that exact right level of pretentiousness. No self-respecting writer can say someone like Dan Brown is their favorite author and if you say someone like Kafka they're either going to stare at you blankly or decide you're totally full of yourself. Trust me. Claiming Fitzgerald would come in really handy this Saturday evening at The Great Gatsby Gala. Don your best roaring 20's attire (there's a contest), enjoy hors d'oeuvres, drinks (including a martini bar), and dancing, and pretend you're Gatsby for the evening. Ok, so hummingbirds kind of freak me out. Birds are fine. Bees are not. Hummingbirds just look a little too much like bees for my liking. Trend on Trial: The Romper

Ok, I didn't want to have to do this. In fact, I didn't think I was going to have to. I thought the whole romper trend might just pass right on by Charlotte and leave us a happy little city where people wore tops AND pants. As separate pieces. Obviously, I was wrong.

Over the course of the last week I've seen at least five rompers being worn around town. I dismissed the first of these as flukes; people who saw some photo of Leighton Meester in People magazine and thought "Oh maybe that's what the kids are wearing these days." Then, a friend showed up for lunch at Big Daddy's in one. Showing up for lunch in one is one thing. Showing up for lunch on Sacred Beloved Hamburger Ground in one is essentially blasphemy. Which is why I feel I must state my feelings on this.

Unless you are a) under 12 or b) under 12 pounds, this trend is really pushing the "I'm trying too hard to look like a playful little girl" envelope. It's a slippery slope that leads to things like pacifiers and Hello Kitty paraphernalia. I strongly advise against it.* If you feel you absolutely must wear one, may I suggest a belt? And heels? And anything else that will make it obvious you got your driver's license before Obama became president?

*This is coming from a girl who is wearing a fedora, scarf, and fourteen gold necklaces today in an attempt to dress boho. So, you know, take this as you will.

It is worth noting however, that Sarah has been rather disillusioned by the headband - an accessory she's always dreamed of being able to wear un-ironically - as it turns out it is incredibly painful to have a tight band running around your skull for hours on end. Who knew!

Love It: Tory Burch Eyewear

Hey, guess what? Tory Burch is launching an eyewear line. Chances are if you're a Tory fan, you already knew this. WWD broke the news about a month ago. However, what you may not have known is that the line has been pushed up to launch now in October. And, even better than that, according to Burch, her inspiration for the line was influenced by photos of her parents on trips during the 60s, 70s, and 80s to places like Greece, Morocco, and Istanbul. Think: vintage yet modern and definitely exotically chic.

The glasses will be priced from $135 to $195 (not cheap, but not anywhere close to some other designers... whose name starts with a T... whose gorgeous sunglasses will forever be out of my price range... ahem, Tom Ford).

Jenn, having had to listen to Sarah wax poetic about the "free spirit that dwells within her", since roughly 2003 has finally had enough. Today, after a series of tweets in which Sarah once again proclaimed her affection for all things hippie, Jenn threw down the proverbial fashion gauntlet.

I’m a self-sufficient adult in my 20’s, but occasionally I go shopping with my mom. And for some reason when I do I turn into a nine-year-old who wants her mother to buy everything for her. For years we’ve had a running joke that when I do want her to purchase something for me I say it’s for “back-to-school” (because “back to school” time was always so glorious growing up as it meant I did get some stuff purchased for me). Interestingly enough, my mom doesn’t find this nearly as amusing as I do. Anyway, this weekend you can do some back to school shopping all for yourself—whether you’re going back to school or just want to look super-fashionable this fall. Guy Style

I went to see Coldplay in concert on Friday night at Verizon Wireless and, while the music was great, the thing that inspired me most from the popular British group was the fashion. I am newly obsessed with Chris Martin’s style from the tour. (It’s worth noting that the look is probably supposed to have some kind of French revolution theme because of the tour and therefore not necessarily meant to be worn out on a Friday night. So, you know, maybe only wear one armband/sash or something to tone it down a little if you decide to go for this style.)

Martin has mentioned that the bands’ outfits were designed by Coldplay bass guitarist Guy Berryman, so you obviously can’t just go out and buy these. But, it’s really more the style here than the actually clothes that I think works so well. It reminded me a little of the style of British designer Alice Temperley’s husband, Lars von Bennigsen. (Interestingly enough, Gywneth Paltrow, Martin's wife, frequently wears Temperley. Not that that is at all related.) Anyway, the military-style-meets-rock-star thing really works. Guys in Charlotte tend to lean to the much more conservative styles. More banker-meets-golfer. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some stylish men around town who couldn’t easily pull off the look.

Here are a few suitable substitutes (just in case you aren’t friends with Guy Berryman and therefore can’t get him to custom make one of your own). Just tie on an armband or two, throw on some bracelets, and your revolutionary style is set:

GET PSYCHED FOR FOOTBALL SEASON: Panthers FanFest 2009

I was born and raised a football girl. I look forward to the first pre-season kick off more than I probably should, and I've been known to shed a tear or two over a (ahem) playoff loss (or two). But the sadness is easily forgotten for all Panther when fall rolls around, and those reinvigorated fans will be out in full force at this annual fest. The day kicks off with a 5k road race, followed by fan contests on the field, peformances by those love-or-hate-em TopCats, and a Panthers practice and scrimmage beginning at 11 a.m.

Reader Response: How do you manage your closet?

Having been raised by a serial pack-rat mom who has saved every nightgown, every formal dress, and every picture day outfit I ever wore as a child/tween, I have matured (rather rebelliously) into a Purger. Last night, I went on my latest, possibly most manic purging spree of recent memory. That cathartic cleansing has inspired me to impart to you, dear Shop Talkers, my Top 5 Rules for Managing Your Closet:

1. If you haven’t worn it in six months, get rid of it (unless it’s a classic piece)! These wise words have been written a million times over in every woman's mag imaginable... and with good reason - it's perfect advice. The catch is figuring out if something is a "classic piece" or not. Here's a hint: if you wore it to death when you first got it, it was probably a trend item. Here's another: just because you paid a bundle for it doesn't make it worth keeping. Sad but true.

2. If you bought it cheap and it's lasted a season, say goodbye. Yes, it certainly is thrilling when you find something super cute at Target or Old Navy and get tons of compliments on it - especially when that something cost you less than $30. Bask in it while it lasts, but recognize that things that don't cost much for you didn't cost much to make, and thus aren't made to last. Wear it, love it, and then donate it before your cheap find starts to look, well, cheap.

3. Purge while you pack. Picking out clothes to take on vacation is the perfect litmus test for your wardrobe. You should pack the things that you feel really good in, that mix and match well, and that always look great on you even after a long plane ride. You should pack accessories that add a punch to your look and a purse that can haul it all plus one that holds just the essentials. Once you've done that, look at what's left in your closet. If you didn't even CONSIDER packing something (like those jeans that are hard to sit down in or the cardigan that always seems to formal) then why do you still have it?

4. If what was once a dress is now a "cover up", then consider the death knell tolled. It used to be worn with boots, heels, leggings and a saucy attitude. Now that dress is dowdy, stretched out, faded, stained, or slightly out of style. It has become a "cover up". You throw it over your bikini on the way to the pool, you slip it on after a shower when it's too early in the day for it to be socially acceptable to wear pajamas. It's not wrong to wring a bit more life out of these past-their-prime frocks, but you should limit how many of your dresses have been relegated to this status. Give them one season as a second-class citizen and then cut the cord.

5. For the love of Louboutin, get your shoes fixed. I'll be honest - this is the one rule on this list that I don't currently adhere to. Perhaps by blogging it, I will now be held accountable, instead of letting perfectly good shoes rot on the shelf because of something trivial like a lost heel tap. I've even written about the Best Shoe Repair place for this very magazine! It's cheap, usually pretty fast, and it will not only extend the life of your wounded pair of stilettos, it will also take the burden off your back up pair... the ones you wear into the ground because you have to wear them twice a much. (Sorry black BCBG sling-back pumps. I know it wasn't your fault I am too lazy to get my other pair of black pumps fixed. You put forth a valiant effort.)

Once, in a fit of Type-A madness, I went through all of my back issues of Real Simple, Lucky and Domino and cut out all the pictures of things that inspired me - outfits, color schemes, floral arrangements, kitchen decor - all of it. I spent hours painstakingly slipping my precious finds into clear plastic sleeves and organizing them into notebooks with tabbed subject dividers. I have never felt so gloriously productive in all my life! I had SUCH big plans to use these notebooks to inspire me to create new outfits out of my existing wardrobe, guide me on my shopping trips, and generally provide me with a bible of my personal style. Skip to a year later, I haven't added to or looked at a single one of these glorious notebooks of mine. Truly. Sad.

That is why I was so thrilled to be introduced to Polyvore, where I can click and drag images of clothes, shoes, purses, jewlery and anything else that catches my eye onto a blank board and save it online for easy access when I need a quick hit of inspiration. Not only that, Polyvore also allows you to click through to an items origin page for easy purchase when day dreaming just won't do.

I wish I had known about this a year ago... could have saved myself a lot of paper cuts.

Ok, so I usually don't promote the same store twice in a row, but yesterday I went to Belk at SouthPark twice in a day and on my second trip, I found some stuff I think you should know about. Right now, they are having an AMAZING sale. Check out the shoe section for mark downs on shoes by designers like Betsey Johnson, Frye, and BCBG. And don't miss the handbags where you can find Dooney & Bourke and Michael Kors bags for under $200.

Today I had the chance to meet with Arlene Goldstein, the Vice President of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction for Belk. She gave me a great preview of a lot of the fashions we'll be seeing this fall. (Side note: It's really hard when you get excited about things like sweater dresses, dark denim, and distressed leather boots—and then you walk back outside into the 85 degree Carolina July.)

However, the part of the presentation that most interested me was Belk's "Most Wanted" list. These are the items that should definitely be present in your closet this fall. I'll attend to the ladies list later, but for now, here are the men's:

These aren't anything crazy, they're just easy-to-remember and easy-to-accomplish styles to update any guy's wardrobe. GRANT A WISH - Rock for the Children Benefit Concert

There are four things in this world that are guaranteed to make me weep instantly: the ASCPA commercial with Sarah McLachlan singing in the background (you know the one), the WWF commercial about how all the polar bears are dying (I've owned a stuffed polar bear since the age of two), video footage of soldiers returning home from war and being hugged by their children, and heartwarming news stories about terminally ill children being granted their life's wish by the Make a Wish Foundation. That's why I implore you to buy a ticket to hear live music this Saturday at Ten O'Clock Charlies in Mooresville. The all day festival for kids and adults will donate all proceeds to the Make a Wish Foundation. Tickets are $15 at the door and it costs approximately $6,000 to make a child's wish come true. FIND A FURRY FRIEND - Adopt a Shelter Cat Month at Joseph-Beth Booksellers

As you might know, Sarah is a dog owner. I too hope to one day be a dog owner, but in my heart, I think I am a cat person. How do I know that? Well, because I already have two of them and I can scarcely pass a pet adoption event without accidentally taking home another one. Here's my pitch for why you should adopt a cat: they are clean, low maintenance, quiet and incredibly soft. They add just the right amount of weight when they sleep at the foot of your bed. They do hilarious things like play the piano and attack ceiling fans (see You Tube for evidence). They've gotten a bad rap for being standoffish and lacking in affection, but that is simply not true. They can greet you at the door, beg to be held, and curl up in your lap while you waste hours on Twitter. Both of my little guys are adopted from shelters, and I wouldn't have it any other way. (Just look at their little faces!!) Adopt one this weekend - you can thank me later.

Jenn v. Sarah: Missoni meets Converse

I think I like Missoni so much because it really hit its fashion peak in the 1960's and 1970's—two decades I missed entirely, but am forever trying to recreate in style. Plus, I just like colorful stuff and they've definitely got that going for them.

Jenn hates Missoni. Our differences of opinion on this matter became apparent on a shopping trip in H&M last year when I wanted to buy a shirt because it looked like Missoni and she said I should not buy said shirt for that precise reason. I believe she may have even thrown around the phrase "I will not be seen in public with you wearing that." On the other hand, Jenn loves Chucks. She wears them with rolled up jeans and t-shirts and manages to pull of the hip and cool thing. If I wore them, I would look like I was trying too hard. Way too hard.

The question here is with the just announced collaboration of Missoni and Converse, have Jenn and I found our perfect middle ground? Or the worst fashion mistake of all time? These shoes are, of course, for a men's line, which adds a whole new twist. A teeny, tiny part of me likes them. The shoes launch next spring. Maybe by then I will have decided how I feel about them.

However, I would consider changing that policy for Keith Urban’s pretty face (seen above) and lovely accent. Unfortunately, Nicole Kidman has already claimed this one. (Not the first time she’s done this to me. I’m still a little bitter about her marriage to pre-Scientologist-jumping-on-couches Tom Cruise—better known to me as “Maverick.”) Anyway, I digress. The first annual Boot Camp to Beat Cancer (BC2BC) is happening this Saturday at Myers Park High School. Benefiting both the Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas and National Students of AMF (Ailing Mothers and Fathers), the event is open to all ages and includes either a one-hour boot camp type workout or a family fun walk. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the event starts at 9 a.m. Pick up a packet for the event at Asana Activewear store on Sharon Road on Friday. (Packets include a free drawstring bag, event t-shirt, water bottle, and special sale for those picking up in the store.)

Frankly, I just don’t have enough diamonds in my jewelry box these days. Personally, I have taken a sabbatical from shopping for the next few days due to little something we'll call "Sarah's inability to restrain herself when she went to Anthropologie last weekend." However, were this not the case, a trip to poole shop would be among my plans for the evening.

Pops in the Park is starting on Sunday. And, in a fun twist, the symphony's first concert has them going country with tunes like John Williams' "The Cowboys" and Aaron Copeland's "Hoedown." So, bring your picnic blanket and cowboy boots and enjoy summertime in SouthPark and live music from the city's talented orchestra. The symphony asks for a $5 donation from adult attendees. Ok, so with the current ridiculous rain conditions (Seriously. Has anyone checked the Atlantic lately? I don't understand how there can be any water left anywhere else in the world because I feel pretty certain it all ended up in my backyard this morning.) you may not be particularly anxious to stroll down the streets of Uptown, tasting the city's delicious food. But, not going would be a mistake. Let me tell you why: a) There is food involved. I have a firm policy to always attend events involving eating. Always. b) This is a perfect opportunity to bring out those cute rain boots and umbrella you've been wanting to show off. See how well this works out? I'm from Shelby. Shhh. I don't tell many people this. I occasionally claim Los Angeles and when I'm feeling like a real challenge, London. But, both are lies. Occasionally good things do come out of Shelby though. (Other than a somewhat suspicious meat called "livermush.") One such thing is Acoustic Syndicate, a five-man band that tours the U.S. and plays a mix of bluegrass and rock. They're actually very good. And tonight they're playing at Neighborhood Theatre in NoDa. If nothing else, this presents a very good way to get out of the aforementioned rain.

I feel that most people are either No Doubt fanatics or they could care less. If you fall in the first camp, then you've known about the concert tomorrow night at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre for months and are currently wearing your "I love Gwen" t-shirt to get you ready for the weekend. If you're in the latter category then right now you're wondering who Gwen is. But, maybe there are some people on middle ground and looking for something fun to do Saturday night. After all that eating you're going to be doing today at Taste of Charlotte, a nice little one-and-a-half mile walk around uptown probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Conveniently, the Charlotte Coalition of Justic is sponsoring a walk called "Charlotte Walks Together" at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning to raise funds for its youth leadership programs. So, here's the thing. I LOVE a good statement shoe. I think it's super fun when the first thing I notice about a person's outfit is their uberfabulous footwear. I have absolutely no problem with a pair of knockout shoes. However, as lady with larger than average feet (and, if we are going to be honest, wider than average as well), I am vehemently AGAINST any sort of bondage-inspired leather prison. You know what I am talking about: these, or these, or these, or these, or these.

Not only do I imagine that these styles would pinch the sides of my (ahem, wide) feet until I am squealing in pain, their flamboyance would undoubtedly draw attention to the size of my foot in general (ahem, large). But then again... I'd hate to miss out on the chance to own a pair of, "Woah, those are awesome!" shoes just because I am terrified of a particular trend. So, I have gone on an online hunt to find shoes that have the essence of this aggressively strappy trend, but re-interpreted and re-imagined into something a bit more, dainty and down-to-earth, and therefore less likely to cause anyone to run away from me screaming " OH MY GOD IT'S A REAL LIVE BIGFOOT!".

So, we're starting a new Shop Talk topic section entirely for you. (We kind of assume the vast majority of our readers are female, so girls, feel free to use this section for gift ideas... or point your style-impaired guys here for a little direction.)

For this section, Sarah promises to keep her total adoration of John Varvatos and Tom Ford to a minimum and Jenn promises not to point out how ridiculous Ed Hardy designs are in every single entry—just every other one. However, we're going to be honest—all in the name of making Charlotte hotter one Charlotte Shop Talk reader at a time.

So, in honor of our first entry on the subject, we'd like to point you in the direction of Taylor Richards & Conger. While this Phillips Place store isn't cheap, it is known for having some of the best men's fashion in Charlotte—with both European and American collections. It's known best for its suits, but we're actually more in to their casual wear section—jeans, sports shirts, jackets, etc. Look for lines like Diesel, Zegna Sport, and Ernest Sewn.

The real reason we want to point you to TRC though is its staff. We can only offer so much here on the blog and let's face it: most guys need some guidance when it comes to shopping. At TRC, the salesmen are helpful, informative, and have a great eye for what will work for each individual shopper. And seriously, if you're spending the kind of money you definitely will be here, then you want to make sure you've found what's right for you.

Ok, confession: I’m not a NASCAR fan. I know very little about the cars or the stars who drive them. I can’t count how many times I’ve had to Google the name of a driver. It’s embarrassing. However, I do know something about festivals. And, since at Charlotte magazine we named Food Lion Speed Street festival as one of the top 51 reasons we love Charlotte this January, it seems obvious that it should be attended. The event goes from 12 p.m. today through Saturday. It features entertainment from Lifehouse, Gavin DeGraw, and Jason Aldean among others. Tonight, EpiCentre is hosting “SpeedCentre” an Alive-After-Five-meets-Speed-Street event that is pretty much guaranteed to be a good time. Dale Earnhardt Jr will be there at his bar Whisky River. Want to meet some more drivers? Kyle Busch will be signing autographs on Friday and Richard Petty will be around on Saturday (check the 600festival.com for details and times). Plus, Busch will be hosting go-kart races on Friday to raise money for his foundation. Watch Mayor McCrory and Josh McCown take on Busch. Then, enjoy the real fun of Speed Street, which is apparently just watching the people.

I adore bathing suits. I don't know why being that I don't exactly look like a Victoria's Secret model when I put one on. But there's nothing that says you're going to have a good time like a cute suit. Last summer I was obsessed with vintage looks like this one by Carmen Marc Valvo for sale at the aforementioned VS.

Right now though, I am loving the new 3.1 Phillip Lim line. It launched last week and while $225 bikinis don't exactly fall under my budget these days, it's just fun to see a designer getting creative in the swim suit realm.

Street Style: Prom Season 2009

There was a time in my life when I positively LIVED for the day that the prom-themed issues of my favorite teen mags (YM and TEEN) would show up on the shelves at the Harris Teeter. I would buy them all, and then lie on the floor in my bedroom ripping out pictures of dresses and updos and makeup ideas, all the while imagining how beautiful I would look slow-dancing with my blue-eyed date. Back then (and no, it wasn't THAT long ago), the trends in prom fashion were pretty tame: strapless necklines, princess ball skirts, and lots of bright colors like hot pink, lime green and aqua. Make up was glittery and girly. Hair was often twisted into little rows along the crown before being wound up into a "sophisticated" up-do. Getting dressed for prom was the ultimate female indulgence - it took all day and at the end of it boys showed up looking cute in tuxedos and you got to have your picture taken. Sigh. Those were the days.

I lost track of what was "hot" in prom fashion in the years following high school - until I was asked to be a chaperone the prom at my alma mater two years ago. I was shocked to discover that the provocative necklines that I thought I would only see on Hollywood red carpets and skinny sorority girls at formals in college had somehow infiltrated the glorious, magical, romantic bubble of little girls playing dress up that I remembered from my own prom days. I saw more underage cleavage that night than anyone should ever see. Ever.

After that eye-assaulting evening, I thought the innocence of prom beauty was lost for good... until I laid eyes on what was stepping in and out of the limos during this year's prom season!

Behold how precious they are!!! I am positively swooning over these delightful frocks! The decolletage on display is flirty without being trashy, the cuts of the dresses look comfortable and romantic, the prints and colors are refreshing and completely, innocently playful. There are no high-maintenance updos, no Taylor Momsen-style eye-liner disasters - just beautiful young girls looking beautiful and young.

I am feeling supremely optimistic about the world all of the sudden. Thank you Prom 2009!

TRY NOT TO WEEP - A Night With Greg Louganis

Sarah and I are both a sucker for a touching story; throw in anything about pets or animals and we are goners. (Remember this if you are ever trying to get us to loan you money. Also we really like Starbucks Chai.) This night promises to be a three-hankey affair: first of all, famed Olympic diver Greg Louganis will open up, on stage, about his storied career, his decision to come out as a homosexual, and his battle with HIV. Then he'll talk about his cause (a.k.a. the cause he is raising funds for by hosting this event): The Greg Louganis Positively Pets Foundation, which raises money to help those infected with HIV (and affected by the high cost to treat it) to be able to afford proper medical care for their pets. SING ALONG - Gavin DeGraw at The Neighborhood Theatre

Those of us who have been watching One Tree Hill since it debuted in 2003 (yeah, that's right. And I love it too!) already know that Mr. DeGraw can croon out a catchy tune that is bound to stick in your head for EONS to come (but, like, in a good way). Some didn't discover him until his song "Chariot" became a hit. Others might still have no idea who this guy is, but whether you are a long time fan or a first time listener, you are bound to be charmed by his emotive lyrics, passionate vocals and great melodies (which should sound even better with a full acoustic band playing with him!). Tickets are nearly sold out (some can still be found on Stub Hub and eBay), which means this guy is definitely catching on, and we couldn't be happier for him. After all, he's not tryin' to be anythin' other than what he's been tryin' to be lately!

PAY TO SEE PRETTY BOYS (AND CUTE ANIMALS!) - Movies this weekend

I know I recently waxed poetic about the precious faces of Matthew Perry and Zac Efron - but this is different. These are more manly pretty boys: Hugh Jackman and Matthew McConaughey. Now, I don't feel particularly drawn to the tales of a jacked-up wolf-man or a emotionally-stunted man-boy, but until the season of summer blockbusters is going full force we are just going to have to settle for what we can get, and in this case that means X-Men: Origins and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (memo to J. Garner: Oh honey... no.) If that's not your bag, then perhaps you, like myself, totally missed the fact that Disney has produced a movie all about adorable animal families around the globe, called earth. We love Billy Reid. It's hard not to enjoy the store. Even if you buy absolutely nothing, from the moment you step through its tall, wooden doors and onto its hardwood floors, you'll find it easy to forget you're actually in SouthPark mall and not just some really cool guy's house. From the black-and-white photos of the designer's friends on the walls to the vintage globes and classic novels accenting the shelves, you'll want to settle in. Conveniently, tonight you can do that for a little while.

The store is holding an Evening Social tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. The event includes bourbon by Woodford Reserve, food from Price's Chicken Coop, and live local music. Jenn v. Sarah: Hippie Headbands

Sarah: So I know I've said this like a bazillion times before, but I love the boho/hippie/free spirt look—which is why more than anything I love the headband around the head thing that I keep seeing celebrities doing. And finally, this weekend, I saw people doing it in real life. I want to try it.

Jenn: Okay, so where exactly did you see these "real life people" wearing this look? Did you stop in at a commune on your way home from Harris Teeter? Oh, what's that? You went to a DAVE MATTHEWS CONCERT. Well, forgive me, how could I ever challenge the fashion expertise that springs from a group of people who could give you a contact high just from brushing past you on the way to the beer stand?

Sarah: So you might be on to me. I was hoping we could move right past the "real life people" thing and you'd assume I'd just seen them out and about in Charlotte. But seriously, there were a lot of them. And they looked really good. I want to do it, but I have two problems. A) My hair is too short I fear. It's necessary to have long, flowing locks to pull this one off. B) Most activities I participate in do not have the same fashion code as a DMB concert. I may have missed my one opportunity. On the other hand, Mischa Barton and Nicole Richie both totally wore this look for formal events.

Jenn: Wispy starlets, musicians' daughters, and the like may wear whatever whimsical headwear they want. Those of us who drive SUV's, shop more than 75% of the time at non-vintage and non-designer stores (like, GASP! Banana Republic), and who have a body fat percentage over .05% are going to have to resign ourselves to the fact that such accessories are just not appropriate.
The idea with across the forehead headbands is to make people say "Oh how free spirited and quirky she must be! Look how she floats through the air like a fairy!" Not, "Oh my, that poor girl. I wonder if she needs help finding the bathroom."

Sarah: I think you're going to eat your words when Banana Republic starts selling these headbands and I look awesome driving my SUV wearing one.

Jenn: When that day comes, I will eat my words and buy you lunch.

Celebrity Style: Lauren Conrad

Ok, so we don’t exactly watch The Hills. Or The City. Or any other show with a geographical location name for that matter. Jenn has been adamantly against the entire concept since its inception and Sarah realized sometime last fall that her IQ points were dipping significantly every time she tuned in to watch Lauren whine about roommate problems (in her Hollywood mansion) and Spencer act like, well, like a word we can’t say on here.

However, its essentially impossible to ignore celebrity gossip these days and so obviously we’ve heard about Spencer and Heidi getting married this weekend. (On a side note: Didn’t they already get married? I mean, I understand that weddings are great photo ops when you’re constantly vying for media attention, but seriously, you can only do this so many times right? I can’t wait to see the insanity of when they have their first child. Twice.)

The thing is, it actually looks like a pretty nice wedding. (Of course, it was being filmed by MTV, kind of taking away from the intimacy factor.) But, what we really want to comment on here is Lauren Conrad’s outfit choice for the event. It’s perfect. Bravo Lauren. It looks sophisticated (big sunglasses, darker shades, high neckline), sexy (short hemline, stiletto heels), and fashionable (hello Chanel and Louboutin). But, above all, between the black hues, big glasses, and sour expression, she has managed to accomplish the “I think this entire thing is ridiculous and I’m going to try to get as close to dressing as if I’m going to a funeral as possible. But, I am still going to look hot. So there.”

I’ve been to a few weddings that I wouldn’t have minded having her stylist for. Oh, and also, I wouldn’t mind having her legs anytime. But really we just wanted to take this opportunity to applaud her fashion choices. Well done Lauren. Sorry you have to go back to that miserable mansion and your pseudo job now.

SECRETLY CRUSH ON MATT AND ZAC - 17 Again Opens in Theaters

Confession: We heart Matthew Perry. Always have. Loved Fools Rush In. LOVED his stint on the West Wing. Even loved him on the lamentable Studio 60. Flat out love him. Second Confession: we might heart Zac Efron too. We were charmed by him in Hairspray, and while we will publicly never admit to having watched any of the HSM iterations (or learning the coreography. Ahem.) we can see why his character would be infinitely appealing to the 16-year-old girl inside all of us. So, now that we have aired our secret feelings, we shall venture without shame to the movie theater this weekend to take in the twin glories of Matt and Zac in this "Big"-in-reverse flick. Now, we will be holding a bit of a grudge, because in our minds you should have never tried to remake "Big" to begin with, but we will by-pass the premise and instead focus on how cute these two guys are.

Reader Response: What to Wear to an Evening Wedding in May in the South?

Dear Shop Talk,

I was invited as a date to a wedding in Camden, SC at the Carolina Cup fields. The wedding is May 2 at 5:30. My date is in the wedding (so he will be wearing a tux) but he has no idea about the attire for the rest of us. The bride's very brief wedding website states that the dress code is "Spring/Summer Formal." From the 5:30pm start time, I take this to mean that I do not need a floor length dress. However, Spring/Summer Formal sounds like something we had in middle school, and I have been away from the Carolinas for too long to know how this is going to play out so I humbly seek your advice. Here are my big questions: Do I have to wear color or can I wear black (I admit it, it's my safety net), what length would be appropriate, and how formal do I need to be? And as a last concern, you don't think the women will wear hats and/or gloves, do you? It's not the weekend of the races or anything, so that would just blow my mind.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Dear Julie,

First, the good news: you do not need to rush out and buy white gloves and a silly hat... at least, we can't IMAGINE that you would need to. If it turns out that women showed up wearing hats and gloves at this wedding, then Sarah and I will wear hats and gloves to work every day for a week by way of an apology. Now for the bad news: you should really try not to wear black. I know it's safe and easy and it's every girl's go-to, but if you can help yourself, try to keep it in the closet for this occasion. There is really only once place on earth that black dresses start to look out of place, and that one place happens to be outdoors, in the South, in the summer. Why? Because usually (not all the time, but usually) the fabrics and textures that are employed in making LBD's are of a more heavy, formal nature (satin sheen, subtle beading, heavy draping), and those things tend to look odd when placed in juxtaposition with pastel sundresses and the warm glow of a southern sunset. If you simply don't feel comfortable in anything other than midnight black, then consider looking for a black dress in a less formal fabric (poplin, linen), or lighten your look with a spring inspired accessory palate (robins egg blue shawl, a bright coral necklace, lemon yellow heels... there are lots of options out there right now). Also, don't forget about black's slightly less dour pal - navy. Navy is an awesome backdrop for pastel and neutral accessories, and it won't seem out of place in the evening. If you do decide to be bold and wear color, steer clear of things that look like they'd be better off at a bridal brunch (ie, most of Lilly Pulliter's classic print collection) You can get away with a lot when it comes to wedding fashion in the South, but dressing like it's 11:00am for an evening wedding where your date will be in a tux isn't one of them. 80's awesomeness on your TV
Somehow despite her fervent intentions to the contrary, Sarah keeps ending up at EpiCentre on the weekend without putting up much of a fight. I have the same problem, except that I keep ending up in front of my Tivo - and this weekend I don't stand a chance. I am a full on SUCKER for the 80's. It stems from my deep deep love for Back to the Future, a movie that is so 80's even the FUTURE they predict looks like 80's! Just, you know, with flying cars. Anyway, I'll be parked in front of my decidedly un-80's flat screen TV this Friday watching Can't Buy Me Love on Oxygen at 7pm, and savoring my way through the Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80's on VH1 ( of course, VH1 will be running it a few times back to back, godblessem). A gangly Patrick Dempsey, fringed suede outfits, and a dash of Dexy's Midnight Runners? That sounds like a fabulous Friday night to me.

What's Happening: BOB Awards Party in May

Currently, here at the magazine, we are putting the final touches on our Best of the Best May issue. Jenn and I did some serious shopping and style research to come up with pages of the city's best boutiques. (It's not easy shopping all over Charlotte, but someone has to do it, you know?)

There are obviously plenty of other categories: nightlife, dining, and home decor to name a few. If you only buy one issue of Charlotte magazine this year (which, please, buy more than that. I'd like to keep my job.), this is the issue to buy.

Which brings me to my point. If you only go to one party this year, this one is the one to attend. Our annual BOB Awards party on May 14th is open to the public and will feature food, cocktails, music, and a fantastic silent auction. Oh, and also, we'll both be there. So clearly you should come. Tickets are $20 if you buy them now. Mark your calendars, buy your tickets, and we'll see you there.

Weekend Ahead: March 27-29

There is A LOT going on this weekend. Here are just a few of the things you can do:

WATCH
Ok, so the weather isn’t exactly conducive to horse race watching (or for wearing sundresses and hats), but on Saturday the Carolina Cup race will draw approximately 65,000 fans, including many from Charlotte to enjoy just that—and other amusing Saturday afternoon activities. The race takes place in Camden, South Carolina and general admission tickets are $40. www.carolina-cup.org

BE BLUE
Blue Restaurant Bar and Lotus boutique are presenting “Fashion for a Cause” this Sunday night at Blue to benefit the Assistance League of Charlotte. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and you’ll have the chance to check out the newest spring fashions from Lotus while you enjoy food and drinks from Blue (martini, anyone?). The show starts at 9, so get there early to mingle before you watch. A $10 donation at the door or donation of a clothing item will benefit the Assistance League. www.bluerestaurantandbar.com

KRAWL
This Saturday night enjoy wine, music, and art in one of Charlotte’s most eclectic hoods at the Plaza Midwood Krawl. Their art galleries, shops, and restaurants will be open late with krawling going on until 11 p.m. Just make sure to save room for fried pickles at end the evening as no night in Plaza Midwood is complete without a stop at the Penguin. www.thekrawl.org

PARTY
On Friday night the EpiCentre’s newest home for fashion, Revolution (formerly known as Rock & Roll Emporium), is hosting a lingerie and fashion show at Whiskey River (also in the EpiCentre). There will be drink specials. And there will be models in lingerie. So, we feel pretty confident saying there will be crowds there. The doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 9:30. www.whiskyriver.com

COMPETE
The Matt & Ramona show on 107.9 is hosting the Perfect Pooch Pageant this Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at SouthPoint Pet Hospital in Belmont to benefit The Humane Society of Charlotte. Registration starts at 1:30 p.m. and for a $10 entry fee you can enter your pooch in one or more of the contests including Ugliest Dog, Cutest Dog, Best Trick, and Pet Fashion show. (Obviously, were Sarah entering her dog, she would win Cutest Dog, but Rosie will be abstaining from this competition so you’ve still got a chance.) www.1079thelink.com

DANCE
Hom nightclub is reopening this weekend, two months after closing its doors. The grand reopening party on Friday night will feature DJ Cut Creator, lots of hip-hop, and “special invited celebrity guests” according to their website.
