Weekend Ahead: May 21-24

GO
Ok, confession: I’m not a NASCAR fan. I know very little about the cars or the stars who drive them. I can’t count how many times I’ve had to Google the name of a driver. It’s embarrassing. However, I do know something about festivals. And, since at Charlotte magazine we named Food Lion Speed Street festival as one of the top 51 reasons we love Charlotte this January, it seems obvious that it should be attended. The event goes from 12 p.m. today through Saturday. It features entertainment from Lifehouse, Gavin DeGraw, and Jason Aldean among others. Tonight, EpiCentre is hosting “SpeedCentre” an Alive-After-Five-meets-Speed-Street event that is pretty much guaranteed to be a good time. Dale Earnhardt Jr will be there at his bar Whisky River. Want to meet some more drivers? Kyle Busch will be signing autographs on Friday and Richard Petty will be around on Saturday (check the 600festival.com for details and times). Plus, Busch will be hosting go-kart races on Friday to raise money for his foundation. Watch Mayor McCrory and Josh McCown take on Busch. Then, enjoy the real fun of Speed Street, which is apparently just watching the people.

LISTEN
Not in the mood for Speed Street’s crowds? Or just looking for a place with some air conditioning after an afternoon in the sun? Listen to the Ocie Davis Trio as your meander through the galleries at the Mint Museum of Craft + Design uptown tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 at their Third Thursdays: Live Jazz! event. It’s free. And has nothing to do with NASCAR.

EAT
Latta Arcade on Tryon Street is bringing back the good, old days. Head over for “Flashback Fridays” tomorrow from 11:30 to 1:30. They’ve got hot dogs and drinks for 25 cents, and deals like buy one, get one half off at Quiznos. Plus, you can enjoy music while you eat. Not too bad for a lunch break, huh? Catch Josh Z performing tomorrow.

RELAX
Tonight at Morrison at SouthPark Sheri Lynch from Bob & Sheri on 107.9 is hosting A Night on the Town. The evening features three fashion segments from ChezElle, Black & Blue, and Scout & Molly’s. So, grab a glass of wine, enjoy this spring weather, and check out the stylish fashions. The event lasts from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.—oh, and did we mention that it has nothing to do with racing? And parking is easy to come by? Tempting, huh?

WATCH
Is there anything that says summer quite like a baseball game? Head down to Knights Stadium in Fort Mill tonight for Thirsty Thursday by Hooters as the Knights take on the Indianapolis Indians. The game starts at 7:15 p.m. The series continues with games tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday. Check charlotteknights.com for all the info.
